The first trimester of pregnancy involves many changes in the woman’s body, including hormone production, morning sickness, breast swelling, and fatigue. It’s important to take care of oneself during this time and discuss any concerns with a doctor.
When a woman is pregnant, her body undergoes rapid changes that are usually quite noticeable, especially for her. In the first trimester everything is changing to adapt to the development of the fetus and the needs that the woman will have after the birth of the baby. Some new hormones are produced by the growing fetus or placenta which can result in many different symptoms and the growing baby alone will make some changes in daily life. Symptoms and changes in the first trimester are variable and some women will feel more uncomfortable than others.
The presence of hormones such as human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) can cause some of the most annoying and noticeable symptoms of first trimester pregnancy. HCG can create significant mood swings. You may be blissfully happy one minute and cry the next, and these feelings can feel a little overwhelming until you get used to them. Another common side effect of HCG is that it can cause the dreaded morning sickness, which may not always occur in the morning and many aren’t always that bad.
Some women find they are turned off by the smells of food, but rarely feel more than nauseous. Other women, especially from week 6 onwards, find they feel nauseous and vomit regularly. It may help to continue eating light meals, avoiding foods that seem repulsive, as low blood sugar can make it worse. It’s also important to talk to your doctor about very frequent nausea, especially if you can’t keep food down. Fortunately morning sickness tends to subside by the end of the first trimester, although some women still remain sensitive to odors.
The mother’s body undergoes changes during the first trimester. These include breast swelling, which can make the breasts feel sore and sore. The skin around the nipples darkens within a few weeks after pregnancy has occurred. The abdomen may increase in size and the clothes may become a little tight. If it’s a first pregnancy, it may not be as obvious and you usually won’t need maternity clothes so soon. If you’ve had babies before, your abdominal muscles may be slightly weaker and cause your baby tummy to appear a little earlier.
Other changes include needing to urinate frequently, as the uterus begins to put pressure on the bladder. This pressure can also cause constipation and hemorrhoids. Another thing women may experience in the first trimester is a general sense of tiredness. It may all seem exhausting, but you won’t always feel this way. In fact, the second trimester can often be a time when you feel great and have great energy.
Expecting a baby can be an exciting time for anyone, and there can be some anxiety getting over the discomfort of a first trimester. Discuss these feelings with your doctor, who you should start seeing on her recommended schedule once you know you’re pregnant. The physical symptoms can also feel a little overwhelming at first and it’s important to be kind to yourself during this time. Get plenty of rest, eat a healthy diet, and get out regularly for light exercise.
