Web Press Operator: Job Description

[ad_1]

A web press operator runs a multi-unit web fed rotary press, responsible for the entire printing process. They must monitor print quality, troubleshoot issues, and maintain equipment. Web printers can print newspapers, magazines, books, and periodicals. Becoming a web press operator requires on-the-job training and formal education.

A web press operator maintains and operates a multi-unit web fed rotary press. The operator is responsible for the entire web printing process, from the big roll of paper or the web to the folder at the end of the printing process. Not only does the printer operator need to prepare the job for printing using ready-made checklists, but he is also responsible for threading the tape or paper around the rollers and through the printer into the slurry and preparing the printer’s drying system.

It is necessary for a web printer operator to consistently monitor print quality. Troubleshooting is also required as issues arise, as is maintaining printer equipment and workspace to avoid downtime and maximize production. In addition, a screen press operator needs to balance ink and water in the printing units to ensure that the images transferred from the printing plates to the press-to-paper mats are crisp.

Web printers typically print newspapers, magazines, books, and periodicals—generally anything that involves long-term printing of large quantities for mass distribution. The webs, or rolls of paper, pass through the printer at high speed. There are two types of web presses: the thermostat, which has heaters to dry the ink, allows the use of coated paper and uses higher line screens; and cold-set, which can only run uncoated papers and newsprint and has a smaller thread screen, producing larger dots and less detail. The cold press uses ink formulated to dry quickly. Some web printers print on both sides of the paper.

Web printers also differ in size. The smallest is the web of tags, only several inches or centimeters wide. Quarter blankets are the next size and can print a four page setup, typically on form presses. Half webs can print eight and 12 page signatures, while full webs can print a full 16 page signature or a 32 page signature.

Becoming a web press operator can be achieved through on-the-job training and formal education. People can acquire skills through high school and post-secondary programs – often associated with graphic design – apprenticeships and on-the-job learning. Many of the skills learned as a web print operator are transferable to other industries and with many changes in technology many print companies are and will be investing in training and skills upgrading. Web print operators need technical skills and mechanical aptitude, as well as a solid understanding of the printing process, as the job is quite hands-on.
