Method acting is a technique used by actors to achieve realism in their performances by using their own emotions from past experiences. It was popularized by Lee Strasberg at the Actors’ Studio in New York City and used by actors such as Marlon Brando and James Dean. The technique is difficult to learn and has different versions taught by different teachers, including Stella Adler who studied with Konstantin Stanislavski. While it is considered the most realistic technique, it can sometimes irritate other actors.
Method acting, or as it is sometimes simply known, method, is a technique used by actors. It is thought to have revolutionized acting as we know it today. He is the antithesis of the wooden actor and uses techniques such as sense and memory to achieve realism in his acting. Actors who use the Method rely on using their own emotions from their past to bring new depth to a part.
Method acting is thought of as an American form of acting, but it was a Russian theater director named Konstantin Stanislavski who wrote books on the subject in the 1930s. Around the same time, one of Stanislavski’s students, Richard Boleslawsky, opened a drama school in New York. Boleslawsky began teaching Stanislavski the basic principles of acting.
In the 1940s and 1950s, method acting was popularized and taught at the legendary Actors’ Studio in New York City by famed acting coach Lee Strasberg. Another New York school, called Actors’ Group, also taught the method under Stella Adler’s guidance. Acting students have come from all over to learn this new technique.
The Method’s popularity grew with the work of actors such as Marlon Brando and James Dean. Their style of acting, or non-acting, was considered a breakthrough in the acting world. Compared to old-fashioned actors like Clark Gable, theirs was an acting of emotion and sensitivity never seen before. Other famous actors who have studied the Method are Al Pacino, Paul Newman and Robert De Niro.
Method acting is considered one of the most difficult techniques to learn; there are no technical forms or lessons that can be practiced to learn it. There are numerous versions of the Method, taught by different teachers. The initial approach was to recall a past experience and immerse yourself in the emotion of that experience in order to apply it to the scene currently taking place.
Stella Adler, who taught method acting to both Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro, studied this technique with Stanislavski. However, she has taken a different approach. She asked students to use their imaginations to enter the character’s mind and adopt the emotions the character would have. In this way, actors could harness real emotions in portraying their characters.
While method acting is thought to be the most realistic technique, it can sometimes present a mild irritation to other actors. Dustin Hoffman once went without a bath and sleep for two days to immerse himself in a role. Seeing Hoffman’s condition, Laurence Olivier, his co-star in the film, famously asked him, “Why don’t you just act?”
