What’s a Desktop Replacement?

[ad_1]

The article discusses three options for desktop replacement: upgrading components, getting a laptop, or combining a laptop with a docking station. These options provide convenience and mobility for both home and workplace use.

Since the advent of the personal computer, many businesses have supplemented easy access to word processing, email, and Internet research by implementing the use of desktop computer systems. With the advent of faster and more powerful hard drives, desktop replacement meant replacing an older system with a newer one. While desktop replacement computers today may still simply trade in an older model for a newer, more rugged type, there are actually a couple of other options to consider. Here is an overview of the three types of desktop replacement that can be considered today for both the home and the workplace.

The first option in desktop replacement is simply upgrading from the slower hard drive and older screen style to newer components. For example, you may have bought a 64MB of RAM system several years ago and now want to upgrade to something that has 512MB or maybe even 1MB of RAM.

In your search for a replacement desktop computer, you may still think in terms of using your workstation all the time. Of course, you’re simply looking for a newer desktop system to replace your older one, complete with a full-size keyboard, a newer flat-screen monitor, and a hard drive that includes some of the CD and DVD capabilities that weren’t on the market a few years ago.

A second option is to get a laptop as part of your desktop replacement plan. With this option, you completely forgo the purchase of a full-sized desktop computer and components. Instead, opt to invest in one of the cutting-edge laptops that have a large screen and ample keyboard size. With this option, you don’t have to worry about ancillary desktop replacements like new keyboards or add-ons. Everything but the printer comes in a nice little package that will take up much less space in your workspace. As a bonus, you can always unplug the laptop and take it with you, running on battery power.
The third option is desktop replacement actually combines the other two options. Out comes the old desktop unit which is now obsolete. In its place is a new laptop with all the latest in operating systems, audio and video capabilities, and with a huge hard drive to store all your files. Along with the laptop, opt to invest in a docking station. The docking station is simply a connection device that allows you to easily connect your laptop to a full-sized monitor, keyboard and mouse. USB connections for Internet access and printing devices are also included along the rear of the station, as is a power cord.
When you want to use your computer on your workstation, simply slide the unit into the docking station until you hear a click, then press the ‘on’ button on the docking station. Many docking stations feature a level or release button, so you can easily detach your laptop from the station. With this solution, you get the convenience of a full-sized desktop solution, but you also have the mobility of a laptop.
Desktop replacements are simple and certainly easier to use today than in years past. Why not look into each of these desktop replacement options and determine which works best for you?
