Skywalker Ranch is the workplace and retreat of Hollywood director George Lucas. Located in the foothills of Marin County, California, the ranch covers more than 4700 acres (16 square meters). Despite the fact that Lucas’ most famous hero is named Luke Skywalker, the ranch is named after a nearby road of the same name.
George Lucas, creator of the historic Star Wars film series and founder of Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), built his retreat in his native Northern California, just miles from the site of his first film, American Graffiti. Marin County, an affluent suburban area, is known for many famous residents and its proximity to San Francisco and the Bay Area. It is here that he founded his own production company, Lucasfilm, as well as the state-of-the-art sound production studio, Skywalker Sound.
Skywalker Ranch has a mysterious reputation and has spawned considerable conspiracy theories among Lucas fans. Aside from a pick list, few reporters and no uninvited guests were ever allowed onto the property. Some reports say that security is constantly having to turn away trespassers, who sometimes travel miles to try and break into the property. With the release of the latest Indiana Jones film in 2008, buses arrived at the property bringing hopeful fans, but no one was allowed ashore.
The ranch includes a Victorian-style main house, used for offices and business, and houses a large collection of film memorabilia. In addition to props from Lucas’ films, the house also contains Charlie Chaplin’s canes and many other historical items. Despite several clusters of buildings, Skywalker Ranch remains mostly undeveloped, with large spaces conducive to the area’s beautiful landscaping and native wildlife.
Skywalker Sound supplies much of the celebrity activity on the property, with world-class actors and directors coming to the ranch to put the finishing touches on movies, record dialogue, and supervise the sound mixing of films. To accommodate visiting stars, the Skywalker Ranch Inn features 26 rooms with Hollywood-themed decor. Each of the rooms is named after a Hollywood figure Lucas admired and decorated to fit their lifestyle.
Following the tremendous success of Star Wars, Lucas began planning to build Skywalker Ranch as a Mecca for filmmakers and an escape from life in Hollywood. The ranch would be built on a grand scale, including a 300-seat movie theater used for screenings, a man-made lake, its own fire department, and a historical library and film archive. While the property may forever remain mysterious to all but a few film dignitaries, it certainly offers young filmmakers the ambitious goal of making it big enough to land an invite.
