Riverside Gallery is a small British museum in South West London. It is located at the Old Town Hall in the Richmond District and is owned and operated by the Richmond Government. The Riverside Gallery offers an ever-changing array of exhibits that include paintings, photographs, prints and a variety of other media. One of the gallery’s most unique features is its focus on local artwork, including the creations of area school children. By showcasing local works, the Riverside Gallery helps encourage community interest in the arts, while also providing aspiring artists with an opportunity to share their creations.
The exhibitions at the Riverside Gallery change every few months and can vary greatly in content and subject matter. In 2011, visitors enjoyed an exhibition entitled “Picture Science” which focuses on artistic interpretations of scientific topics. A series of works on Darwinism was an important part of the exhibition. In previous years, the gallery had exhibited an exhibition dedicated to the art of comics, including graphic novels and other modern comic book creations.
Other exhibitions at the Riverside Gallery include work by local students and youth. These works often center around a certain theme, such as a past exhibition titled “Impact of War,” which showcased student interpretations of war and its aftermath. Many of these creations are completed under the supervision or consultancy of artist-in-residence, Alex Baker, who conducts numerous educational programs at the Riverside Gallery in addition to creating his own work.
In addition to these local works, the gallery also hosts exhibitions by leading artists, including national and international figures. Some of the Riverside Gallery’s most famous works come from Orleans House Gallery, also run by the Richmond government and located nearby. The Riverside Gallery often selects the most popular works from previous exhibitions at Orleans House and displays them in their facility for local visitors.
The Riverside Gallery is open six days a week and closed on Sundays. Admission is free for both children and adults, and the gallery is open to the public all year round. Unlike many other British museums, the Riverside Gallery has numerous works for sale to visitors. In fact, many of the works by local artists can be purchased at the end of an exhibition. By offering works for sale, the gallery not only offers young and emerging artists the chance to earn money for their creations, but also helps them gain exposure and build a career in the industry.
