What’s Pear Bread?

[ad_1]

Pear bread is a moist, fruit bread made with ripe and firm pears, often with nuts and spices. It’s a homemade comfort food, baked in a tubular or loaf pan and topped with powdered sugar or glaze. Variations include pear and honey bread and spiced pear bread.

Pear bread is a type of moist, quick, or yeast-free fruit bread made with pears. Similar in texture to banana bread, pear bread can be made with nuts, such as walnuts or almonds, or without. A good choice for breakfast, this bread is sometimes described as a comfort food. It is usually made at home and is not frequently found on the market.

Made in a tubular pan or loaf pan, pear bread is often topped with powdered sugar or a simple glaze. The pears used for this bread should be ripe and firm. Once the pears are peeled and cored, they are chopped or grated. Chopped pears create a speckled appearance in the final bread when cut, as the pear pieces are easily visible throughout the bread. The grated pears will create a smoother look.

Care must be taken not to cut the pears too early, however. If left exposed to air, they begin to brown. If the pears need to be cut ahead of time, placing them in water will help keep them from turning brown.

Most of the dry ingredients, such as flour, baking soda, and baking powder, are mixed in first. Spices such as cinnamon, ginger or nutmeg can also be used. If nuts are used, they are tossed with some of the flour mixture and set aside. The other, mostly wet ingredients are then blended in a separate bowl. Eggs, butter or oil, and vanilla or almond extract are common wet ingredients for pear bread.

The pears, sugar and walnuts are also blended into the wet ingredients before being combined with the flour mixture. Once thoroughly mixed, the batter is then poured into pans. Most recipes call for enough batter for one skillet or two saucepans. Pear bread usually takes about an hour to bake.

There are several variations on the basic pear bread. For example, pear and honey bread is made with honey and brown sugar as well as white sugar. It also includes more spices, such as cloves, than most other pear breads. Spiced pear bread is also made with additional spices and also includes molasses.

A buttermilk glaze is a popular topping for this bread. Made from buttermilk, sugar, and butter, this glaze also adds flour or cornstarch to help thicken the liquid, and vanilla extract for flavor. To prepare, all ingredients are mixed and then boiled. The glaze is then sprinkled onto the finished bread.
