Stomach pain can be caused by many conditions, some serious and some not. Common causes include gas, constipation, food intolerances, and organ problems. Sharp or sudden pain may indicate a serious condition, and medical attention should be sought if the pain persists.
Stomach pain is a common symptom of many different conditions, all of which cause discomfort in the abdominal cavity. It can come on suddenly, in the case of acute stomach pain, or develop slowly, going from just mildly uncomfortable to very painful over the course of a few hours or days. Some stomach pains will go away on their own, while some pains could indicate a serious problem that will require medical attention.
Some causes of stomach pain are very common and not serious. These causes include a buildup of intestinal gas, constipation, and the effects of eating a food that your stomach doesn’t handle well, such as processed cheeses or foods with a lot of fat. Lactose intolerance can cause abdominal pain, as can food allergies or food poisoning. Young babies with a lot of stomach pain may experience colic. The stomach flu, or bug, can also lead to stomach pain. Other common causes of stomach pain include heartburn or acid heartburn.
Another cause of stomach pain is a problem with an abdominal organ. This may be due to kidney stones, gallstones or ulcers. Stomach pain can also be a symptom of appendicitis or pancreatitis. In some cases, the pain may be caused by stomach, bowel, colon, or pancreatic cancer. Ovarian cancer can also cause stomach pain.
There are several diseases and ailments that cause stomach pain. These include irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel syndrome. Stomach pain can also be a symptom of shingles or Crohn’s disease. In some cases, stomach pain could be a symptom of sickle cell disease.
Sharp or sudden stomach pain can be a sign of a serious medical condition. A blockage in the intestines, which does not allow anything to pass, can cause a lot of pain. An intestinal infarction, in which a vein is blocked, is also very painful. Decreased blood flow to the intestines causes intestinal death, which can be fatal if not diagnosed and corrected in time.
There are many causes of stomach pain, and it can be hard to tell whether or not that pain is a symptom of something more serious. Most stomach pain comes from minor irritation and will go away within a few hours. If the pain gets worse or doesn’t go away after a day or two, it may be time to see a doctor.
