Sustainable construction uses renewable energy to power homes. Green roof, underground, wooden, greenhouse, and houseboat houses are examples of sustainable housing that use natural resources to regulate temperature and reduce environmental impact.
Sustainable construction, or green architecture, refers to environmentally safe building designs. This type of dwelling may, in whole or in part, use renewable energy, such as the sun or water, to power the homes. There are many different types of sustainable housing.
Green roof houses are buildings with roofs that include various types of plants. Greenery brings many benefits to the home, such as good insulation that blocks outside noise. Green roofs also often help regulate temperatures, keeping the building cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. They can be used as gardens for growing fruit, vegetables or flowers which improve the air quality not only for the home, but also for the surrounding environment.
Underground houses are another type of sustainable building. These are usually made much like traditional houses, but are built partially or completely underground. Some have moss-covered roofs that blend in with the greenery outside. Many of these homes use geothermal energy, or heat stored within the Earth, to regulate temperature. Despite being underground, many of these houses have strategically placed windows that allow natural sunlight to illuminate them.
Even modern wooden houses are an example of bio-architecture. There are many variations of this type of dwelling, but some are rectangular in shape and clad in oak. Log homes are often designed to blend into the trees outside and can include special features like sliding ceilings with glass doors to further blend the home and the outdoors. Many wooden buildings are also designed to let air and light into the rooms and create a sense of space.
Greenhouses are usually supported by steel frames and have walls made almost entirely of glass. This feature allows natural light to heat the whole house during the day. These homes often include photovoltaic panels, which convert sunlight into electricity that can power the home at night. This system reduces electricity bills and the impact on the environment. Sometimes, nature is literally included in the house, like a tree left to continue growing through the building: it is the trunk inside the house and the branches above the roof.
Another unique type of sustainable building is found in the form of houseboats or houseboats. These green houses float on water and are typically small and light in weight. While houseboats aren’t usually large, their design typically makes the most of the space, often making them feel spacious inside. Some of these structures are filled with argon gas which helps insulate and keep the house afloat. Many houseboats use solar and hydroelectric energy, or energy generated by running water, to produce electricity and heat.
