What’s a cold metal saw?

[ad_1]

Cold metal cutting saws are lightweight, hand-held saws used to cut thin sheet steel without heating the blade or material. They preserve the sharpness of the blade and anti-corrosion coating on the cut edge. They are primarily used by sheet metal repairers for efficient cutting and trimming of thin sheet metal and corrugated iron often used in residential and commercial roofing. They are not suitable for cutting any other material.

A little brother of the cabinet-sized cold saw, the cold metal cutting saw is used to cut thin sheet steel. This saw is a lightweight hand-held saw with a circular saw-like blade used for cutting wood planks. Less commonly seen is a table saw, just like a miter saw, which offers a more precise cut when working with longer lengths of material. The saw blade of this type of saw is manufactured using Cermet, a ceramic/metal composite that not only resists heat but will hold an edge much longer than the tungsten carbide blade this composite is designed to replace. The cold metal cutting hand saw is powerful enough to cut steel plates up to 23 inches (6mm).

Cold metal cutting saws are designed to quickly cut through lengths or chunks of galvanized sheet steel without heating either the blade or the material. This cold sawdust thus preserves not only the sharpness of the saw blade, but also the anti-corrosion coating on the cut edge. It is also designed to avoid leaving damaging burrs on the metal. The saw is normally equipped with a resistant aluminum catcher to collect the chips (steel particles or sawdust) thus preventing them from dispersing in the work area.

Primarily used by sheet metal repairers, cold cut metal saws enable efficient cutting and trimming of thin sheet metal and corrugated iron often used in residential and commercial roofing. Sheet metal, actually thin rolled mild steel – steel containing less than 3% carbon – must be kept cool when it is cut. This ensures that the anti-corrosion zinc coating on the sheet remains intact at the edges of the cut, thus preventing premature rusting of the material.

A portable cold metal cutting saw easily cuts through the thin sheet metal used in today’s roofing construction. This material has an average thickness of about 03 inches (1 mm) and is light, strong and reasonably inexpensive. In addition to sheet metal and corrugated iron, modern metal roofs can be made from stainless steel, copper, aluminum, or zinc alloys. A cold metal cutting saw, designed primarily for cutting steel plate and corrugated iron, is generally not suitable for cutting any other material. Electric or nibbler metal shears, scissor metal shears, or circular saws with abrasive blades would be much more effective at cutting these other types of metal roofing.
