Narcissistic personality disorder causes self-centeredness and disregard for others’ feelings, leading to hostility during divorce. Marriage to a narcissist requires constant sacrifice and lack of empathy. Divorce is sought by those who cannot continue living with a narcissist.
Narcissism is a psychological disorder in which sufferers have an overly inflated sense of self and importance. Someone with narcissistic personality disorder is really self-centered and doesn’t consider other people’s feelings. This self-centeredness is a major connection between narcissism and divorce. The narcissistic personality is always thinking about how to please themselves without any regard or consideration for how their actions might affect their spouse.
This disregard for other people’s feelings carries over to divorce. Narcissism and divorce often result in a crude affair for the partner divorcing the narcissist. The narcissist often behaves with extreme hostility towards his or her spouse because he or she views the spouse as an opposition to a goal. It doesn’t matter if the narcissist was the cause of the divorce through his callousness and other actions. The narcissist will still try to manipulate their spouse by resorting to selfish tactics.
The situation is further aggravated if the person who initiated the divorce is the one who does not suffer from narcissism. This is like a blow to the narcissist’s ego, who believes the world revolves around him or her. Narcissism and divorce are also linked because marriage to a narcissist is a daily sacrifice by the other partner who must keep giving up more and more expectations and needs in order to satisfy the narcissist. Some of the things your partner may have to sacrifice include acceptance, love, understanding, and a sense that someone is there for him or her. A narcissist is often unwilling to compromise, so the partner must be willing to do things her way for the marriage to work.
Such a person may even be threatened by his partner’s success and will not hesitate to put down his partner’s achievements. Another aspect that makes living with a narcissist difficult is the fact that she lacks the ability to empathize with others. This makes it difficult for that person to understand what others are going through and to show consideration for other people’s feelings. For example, a narcissist who is used to having his wife eat dinner on the table might not care that she has a headache. He would still have expected her to prepare his meal, regardless of her. Narcissism and divorce are also related as spouses who do not want to continue living that way will eventually seek divorce.
