Americans still read for pleasure, with about 75 percent of adults saying they read at least one book in the previous year, according to a 2013 survey. However, it is estimated that the number of Americans who haven’t read a book in the past year has tripled since 1978. For people who read for pleasure, the format has changed, as nearly 40 percent of American adults surveyed said they read books electronically. Another 2013 survey found that adults ages 18 to 39 who owned e-readers or tablets had read an average of 21 books in the previous year, compared with 13 for people who didn’t own such a device.
