What’s a Community Dev. Committee?

[ad_1]

A community development committee is a planning board that focuses on economic and urban development, housing, and community policies. They review proposed projects, make recommendations for the sale of city-owned properties, regulate the business environment, and discuss community revitalization. Meetings are held at least once a month.

A community development committee is a type of planning board that usually exists as part of an elected city council or other elected city leadership group. Committee members may be elected or may be volunteers who serve on the committee as an aspect of their other duties. In general, a community development committee is focused on economic development issues as well as urban development and housing. They can also discuss community policies as well as revitalization projects to improve the community and make it a productive, safe and economically viable place to live.

One of the most common jobs of a community development committee is to review proposed projects related to community housing development. The committee can review the plans and compare them to local zoning regulations in an attempt to determine the permits that need to be obtained, any effect on local taxes, and the overall impacts of the project on the community. Communities don’t want to undertake projects that are too expensive or that might harm the community as a whole; the development committee helps to ensure that this does not happen. In some cases, the development committee also discusses the logistics of a project, such as the business or contractors that will be hired, provided there are no conflicts of interest.

For city-owned properties, the community development committee may also make recommendations for their sale. To some extent, regulating the city’s or county’s business environment can be part of your tasks, as can ensuring that businesses and manufacturers stay within zoning regulations. For example, the community development committee may refuse to allow the installation of a factory or waste processing plant next to a school based on city planning and zoning laws.

Community revitalization is also an important part of the work of many community development committees. The committee might discuss ways to increase tourism or community involvement in the area, support local businesses, or support work that needs to be done to make the area a safer place to live. For example, installing street lights, replacing dangerous sidewalks, or painting or renovating business fronts on main streets are examples of community revitalization. This may involve grant applications, proposal review, or other work that requires input from many different people. As a result, these committees usually meet at least once a month, if not more often.
