A balancing machine helps create symmetry in rotating machines. It can balance a variety of parts, including rotors, disk drives, turbines, and propellers. The machine rotates the object and uses sensors to determine how much displacement is required to establish balance. There are two main types of balancing machines: hard bearing and soft bearing. Static balancing machines allow a workpiece to remain stationary during measurement, while blade balancing machines weigh each blade as it’s created. Portable balancing machines can be used for tools that cannot be easily disassembled.
To establish and maintain proper tension in a car, a mechanic often needs the help of a specialized tool. A balancing machine is used to help create this type of symmetry within rotating machines. It can accomplish this task through the rotation of the individual parts and the sensing of the sensor.
In a typical balancing machine, a set of two stationary pedestals is accompanied by bearings and a suspension. Most machines have the ability to balance a variety of parts. These parts can include rotors for electric motors, disk drives, turbines, disk brakes, fans, pumps, and propellers.
To use a balancing machine, the element to be aligned can be placed directly on the bearings, manually or mechanically. The unit is then rotated, using a pneumatic, terminal or belt drive. While rotating, the object will vibrate. This vibration will allow connected sensors within the machine to determine how much the unit may be out of balance and therefore how much displacement is required to establish balance. It can also pinpoint where weights, if any, are needed for balancing and where weights should be placed.
There are many types of balancing machines. The two main types, hard bearing and soft bearing machines, differ in their suspension. Hard bearing balancing machines have low frequency use and are more flexible and durable. They can be used for items with weights that vary greatly.
Machines with soft bearings require a higher frequency and are less flexible to use. They involve a new calibration for each use and can be used for squaring of a very precise nature. Although considered more time consuming, soft bearing machines are ideal for high production work.
A static balancing machine allows a workpiece to remain stationary during measurement. Also known as a vertical balancing machine, it calculates balance based on how far the part could move away from its geometric center while stationary. Blade balancing machines are used to balance units during assembly in order to prevent further correction after a product has been completed. Used on items like turbines, fans, and propellers, they weigh each blade as it’s created. They then enter the blade weights into a software program which sorts them into usable arrangements.
For tools that cannot be easily disassembled, such as machines currently in use, portable balancing machines can be used. Using displacement sensors mounted on a workpiece, they measure vibrations while a machine is running. This identifies which parts need balancing.
