What’s Corrugated Galv. Steel?

[ad_1]

Corrugated galvanized steel is a rust-resistant material used for roofing and walls. It is difficult to weld and paint, but can be attached with screws. It is often used as an underlying material for concrete and to build grain bins and water tanks.

Corrugated galvanized steel is often used for roofing applications where rust is not required. The corrugated version is simply galvanized steel sheet folded into pieces that contain ridges. Contains rises and falls as well as flat and low points to secure it to a surface. These sheets can be applied in an overlapping fashion to create leak proof seams on ceilings and walls. This galvanized material is used in climates that favor rapid rusting through unprotected metals.

Bolts and screws are the preferred method of attaching corrugated galvanized steel. The zinc plated finish creates a difficult to weld surface. The high heat generated by welding galvanized steel often causes the zinc plating to burn and peel off. This in turn creates rust at every weld location. Generally, where possible, self-tapping screws equipped with rubber washers are used.

Corrugated galvanized steel is bright and shiny silver. It is difficult to paint the galvanized surface and this is the limiting factor on the usefulness of this material as a building component. Used as an outdoor construction product, the structures can be distracting and even dangerous to passing motorists due to the glare and reflective properties of the galvanized finish. The use of corrugated galvanized steel is usually limited to roofs and interior walls that may come in contact with water, chemicals and animal waste.

Often used as an underlying material, concrete is often poured over corrugated galvanized steel. The galvanized finish prevents the steel from prematurely rusting under concrete, and the corrugated panels create a strong, durable surface in which to support the heavy weight of the concrete. Corrugations allow for long spans of concrete to be poured with the need for fewer vertical supports.

The large outdoor grain bins are created from corrugated galvanized steel panels. The panels make very strong walls that need no external or internal supports beyond the corrugated panels themselves. By starting at the bottom and placing the panels on top of each other, the grain silos are sealed against water. The moisture levels of the grain do not affect the galvanized panels at all and they become fixtures on the farm site.

Galvanized steel corrugated panels are also used to build water tanks. The anti-rust characteristics of the galvanized panels prevent tanks from rusting and developing leaks. Large tanks are built to hold water supplies in areas that often experience long periods of drought, while smaller tanks are used to water livestock.
