What’s a bale wrapper?

[ad_1]

A bale wrapper is a machine used to create silage by picking up, compacting and wrapping cut grass in plastic. It can perform the tasks of a baler and wrapper simultaneously, and is usually towed by tractors. Bale wrappers can create bales with varying diameters.

A baler wrapper is a farm implement that is primarily used to create silage, which is a fermented grass crop that is often fed to animals or used in anaerobic digesters. After a crop has been cut and raked into rows, a bale wrapper is able to pick it up, compact it into cylindrical bales and then wrap the bales tightly in plastic. This process can also be done by two separate machines, although a bale wrapper will usually get the job done quicker with less manpower. These devices are usually towed by tractors and driven by a power take-off (PTO), although many of them have electronic monitoring components.

After some crops, such as straw and hay, have been cut, they need to be protected from the elements. One way this is commonly accomplished is with a hay baler, which is equipment that can force the crop into compact blocks or cylinders which are then wrapped with twine. The bales can then be moved to a covered area such as a barn or left to dry before being wrapped in black plastic in a separate machine. In some cases, however, the crop must be made into silage, which is achieved by wrapping moist grass crops in white plastic and allowing them to ferment. This can be done with separate pressing and wrapping units, although a combined machine is often preferred.

Bale wrappers are capable of performing the tasks of a baler and a wrapper simultaneously. These machines are usually pulled by tractors and driven over mounds of raked and cut grass. The bale wrapper then collects the cut material in a drum, compresses it into a cylinder and wraps it before ejecting it onto a turntable. After the bale has been ejected, the baler wrapper can immediately start packing a new one.

At the same time that the wrapper is packing a new bale, the first one can automatically be wrapped on the other side of the machine. The bale is typically rotated on the turntable while one or two rolls of plastic are stretched over it. This results in an airtight sealed bale which can then ferment into silage.

Some reels are fixed, while others are referred to as flexible. These terms refer to the drum inside a baler where the crop is compressed into a cylinder. The diameter of a drum in a flexible baler can be changed within a certain range. This can allow a baler wrapper to create bales with varying diameters. Stationary wrappers can only create a single bale size.
