Fuzzy dice were a popular decoration in the 1950s and 60s, hanging from rear view mirrors in cars. They were usually white with black dots and measured approximately 4 inches per side. Today, they are available in various colors and sizes as a novelty gift. They can be easily made with faux white fur material, black pom poms, ribbon, and polyester padding. However, large fuzzy dice may not be legal to hang from a rear view mirror if they block the driver’s field of vision.
In the days of Elvis and the hula-hoop, big hair and big cars, fuzzy dice hung from the rear views of every street bar with even an ounce of chill. Fuzzy dice were usually white with black dots just like playing dice, but several times larger, resembling large fuzzy pillows.
Fuzzy dice can come in many different colors and sizes, but the original fuzzy dice measure approximately 4 inches (10 cm) per side. They were hung above dashboards in drive-in movies and malt shops. They waved with the speed of the engines through the glass exhaust pipes on the drag strips and into the streetlights. A lead sled just wasn’t complete without a set of big fuzzy dice.
Fuzzy dice were one of the first decorations to hang from rear view mirrors. Over the years, this trend was followed by a variety of items, including rosaries, “love beads,” crystals on a chain, and air fresheners. Today fuzzy dice are available in all colors and many sizes as a novelty gift. While considered tacky by some and campy by others, fuzzy dice can still set the tone on a classic 1950s cherry car or restored hot rod.
Fuzzy dice are easy to make for the craft enthusiast. The materials required amount to just over ¼ yard of faux white fur material, 21 small black pom poms, a 16-inch (40.64 cm) ribbon for hanging, and some polyester padding. To begin, create a cross pattern on paper that measures 16 inches (40.64 cm) for the vertical leg of the cross and 12 inches (30.48 cm) wide for the cross bar. Position the cross bar exactly 4 inches (10.16 cm) down from the top of the cross. Both legs should be 4 inches (10.16 cm) wide. Cut out the cross, then place it on the back of the material and cut out the pattern.
When the vertical leg is folded in on itself at 4-inch (10.16 cm) intervals, this pattern forms a hollow box. The top of the cross is the “lid” while the “flap” crossbar on each side folds over to form the sides. Pin the box together, then sew it by hand or by machine, leaving the flap partially open at one corner.
You can stuff the fuzzy dice with polyester padding to the desired firmness and roll the ribbon to form the hanger, sewing the open end to the inside top corner of the fuzzy dice. Now sew the flap closed. All that remains is to sew the pom poms to the outside to form the dots on the fuzzy dice.
If you’re not interested in making your own fuzzy dice, they’re widely available at auto and novelty stores, and from online vendors. Please note that large fuzzy dice may not be legal to hang from a rear view mirror if they block the driver’s field of vision. Although unlikely, this could result in a ticket or even an accident. It might be better to remove the blurry dice while driving.
