Manhattan residents live at most five miles from a subway station, with the furthest being a $1.2 million penthouse on 20th Street. New York City has the largest subway system in the world, with 20 routes serving 27 stations. Beijing’s subway is the busiest, with 3.8 billion trips in 2018.
Comedian Steven Wright said everything is within walking distance if you have enough time, but for many residents of New York City’s bustling Manhattan borough, it’s no joke to say you can get anywhere you want with a minimal number of steps. That’s because every Manhattan apartment dweller lives — at most — just five miles from a subway station. Researcher Ben Wellington used maps and Metropolitan Transportation Authority information from two residential databases to figure out that the furthest apartment in the neighborhood from a subway station is an approximately $1.2 million penthouse on 20th Street. Putting it into a pedestrian perspective, if you walk at 84 mph (average pace), you can get from that penthouse to the transit station in under 3 minutes. For the record, New York City boasts the largest subway system in the world, with 20 routes serving 27 stations.
Riding the Rails:
New York City’s subway system is the largest but not the busiest: Beijing’s subway has about twice as many riders each year, with about 3.8 billion trips made in 2018.
You can ride a single subway line more than 31 miles (50 km), from 207th Street in Manhattan to Far Rockaway in Queens.
A subway stop in Brooklyn is 88 feet (27 m) above ground level, making it the highest carriage station in the world.
