The cauldron is a popular beer cocktail consisting of a glass of beer accompanied by a shot of whiskey, tequila, or vodka. It can be prepared in different ways, either by the customer or bartender, and is typically consumed quickly for an immediate rush.

As a popular cocktail in many countries around the world, the cauldron is a simple but effective blend of liquor and beer. While preparation and serving methods may vary slightly from location to location, the basic component of this beer cocktail is a glass of beer that’s accompanied by a shot of whiskey, tequila, or vodka. The simplicity of the boilers is the inspiration for calling the drink a shot and a beer.

Preparing and presenting a boiler usually follows one of two approaches. Often, the beer glass is pulled and served to the customer. A full glass of vodka, tequila or whiskey accompanies the beer. The customer can then choose to either add the liquor to the beer glass, or lower the liquor in one swift motion and chase the liquor with the beer.

A second approach is for the bartender to do the actual blending of the two base boiler ingredients. A glass of beer is prepared, with room for a shot of liquor to be added. The bartender can set up the full boiler behind the bar and pass the glass to the customer, or pour the liquor into the glass after placing the beer on the bar. This second approach allows the customer to observe the amount of liquor added to the beer. Whether the bartender or customer chooses to mix the liquor and beer together, the combined blend is referred to as a sidecar boiler.

A variation on the sidecar boiler adds another dramatic momentum to the drink’s presentation. In this case, a shot glass filled with your favorite liquor is dropped into the beer. Due to the carbonation content of the beer, the result is the creation of a large amount of bubbly action. When the beer starts to sizzle, the customer should start choking the boiler. This approach to preparing and consuming a boiler is known as a depth charge boiler.

While the exact composition and serving size of a cauldron will vary from bartender to bartender, one factor is certain. A boiler is not created as a beverage option intended for slow consumption. Rather than sipping, the boiler is conveniently knocked down quickly, often resulting in an immediate rush or hum for the customer.
