Diesel engines rely on a small component called a diesel pump to carry fuel from the tank to the engine for combustion. There are two types of pumps: mechanical and fuel injection. Malfunctioning pumps can cause engine problems, and regular maintenance is important to prevent failure.
Diesel engines are considered to be some of the most powerful and reliable engines available, but their power would be worthless were it not for a small component called a diesel pump. This little device helps carry fuel from the tank to the engine to aid in combustion which allows automobiles to carry households and semi trucks to haul large loads. There are two types of fuel pumps, depending on the type of engine and the age of the vehicle. Malfunctioning fuel pumps can be the cause of many engine problems.
A diesel pump is the gate between the engine’s fuel line and its carburetor. There are two distinct types of pumps, known as mechanical pumps or “pullers” and fuel injection pumps or “pushers”. These are found in every engine that uses diesel. Without it, there would be no regulation of the amount of fuel reaching the engine and it could get too much or too little, causing the engine to malfunction.
A mechanical extractor diesel pump is primarily a rubber seal that opens and closes to allow fuel from the tank to enter the carburetor. Each time the camshaft makes one rotation – most camshafts make several rotations per second – a connected arm moves up and down. This arm is connected to an inlet valve which opens the seal for a fraction of a second. This welcomes fuel into the engine to aid combustion and power the engine. When this occurs, the combustion causes the camshaft to rotate continuously, so in essence, the mechanical diesel pump is self-propelled.
A diesel fuel injection pusher pump is a more modern way of transporting fuel from the tank to the engine and is found in most performance cars and many newer vehicles. This pump is located in or near the fuel tank in the fuel tank and is electronically controlled by the engine’s computer system. The mechanical pump draws in the fuel using pressure, but the fuel injection system pushes the fuel through the line to the engine. This allows for an even more precise amount of fuel to flow and is the main reason it is the preferred method for high performance vehicles.
Poor engine performance can often be traced to a fuel pump, whether it’s electrical or mechanical. When bearings and seals wear out over time, the amount of fuel entering the engine is less accurate and can contribute to engine failure. Dirt and rust often get past the filter system and plug the small openings inside a pump, also causing engine failure.
