A truck hoist, also known as a winch, is used to lift items out of the way or free a stuck vehicle. It consists of an electric motor, steel cable, and a hook, and can be mounted on the front or rear of a truck. The cable can be unwound manually or with the electric motor. When mounted on a stuck vehicle, the hoist cable is attached to another vehicle or stable object to assist in pulling the stuck vehicle out.
A truck hoist is also commonly known as a winch and is a device used to get items out of the way of the truck. The truck hoist is also an invaluable tool when used to free a stuck vehicle. By wrapping the hoist cable around a tree or other anchored object, the hoist can be used to help lift the truck out of mud or other substance in which it is stuck. When assisting another truck that is stuck, the hoist cable can become attached to the vehicle’s chassis and is used to help lift the vehicle out of mud, sand, or snow.
Consisting of an electric motor powering a drum or reel of steel cable, the hoist can be mounted on the front or rear of the truck; however, the most common mounting location is at the front of the truck. A very strong wire rope is wound around the truck’s lifting drum and a steel hook is attached to the end of the rope to allow the rope to be hooked to an object. When necessary, the cable is taken off the reel and attached to another vehicle or firm, solid object such as a tree.
The cable can be unwound from the drum in one of two methods. The manual method involves one person placing the truck hoist in the neutral position and physically pulling the desired amount of wire rope from the hoist. An alternative method is to turn off the cable. In this method, the hoist is placed in the off position and the hoist uses the electric motor to pay out the cable until it is turned off. This is commonly the slower of the two methods, but in the manual method, the wire can often bind and be difficult to remove.
If the hoist is mounted on the vehicle that is stuck, the hoist cable is placed on another vehicle or a stable object such as a tree. The truck’s hoist is brought into the pulling position, and when the cable is tightened, the stuck vehicle assists in the action by applying power to the tires until the vehicle is free of the substance in which it was stuck. Mounted on a truck that is assisting another vehicle, the hoist cable is connected to the stuck vehicle, which then applies power to the tires as the hoist is pulled.
