A man’s man engages in traditionally masculine activities and earns respect from other men, but changing gender roles have led to a redefinition of manhood. Such men pride themselves on being practical, tough, and logical, and may prefer self-sufficiency. Some find this culture off-putting, while others view it as a prime example of how to behave.
A man’s man is a man who engages in activities that are traditionally considered masculine and who earns the respect of other men. Such men can also be described as “manly”, emphasizing their masculine personality. They tend to be bossy, confident, and bold, because these character traits are reinforced by traditional gender roles.
Western society has changed dramatically in the 20th century, largely due to the efforts of the feminist community. There has been a breakdown of traditional roles of gender, race and culture, leaving some people feeling adrift or unclear about their roles in life. As a result, the definition of manhood and what it meant to be a man began to change and the concept of “man’s man” acquired new connotations, distinguishing such men from their more feminine or gendered counterparts.
Activities that a man’s man might be interested in include hunting, fishing, playing or watching sports, cookouts, construction projects, camping, and equipment maintenance and repair. In the traditional framework of gender roles, such tasks are seen as highly masculine, and indeed continue to be dominated by men, with fewer women engaged in these activities as a general rule. A man can also distinguish himself from other men by showing that he has engaged in these activities since childhood, rather than taking them up as a hob later in life.
Other men are often respectful of a man’s man because of his abilities and personality. Some men feel threatened by changing gender roles in many societies, so they may admire masculine men for embodying gender ideals. Others simply feel attracted to such men, either because they are masculine men themselves or because they have a liking for manly men.
As a general rule, these men pride themselves on being practical, tough, reasonable, and logical. They believe they can confidently solve any problem that might be thrown at them and are prepared for a range of situations. A man’s man may also prefer to “sink in” while working on projects, eschewing comforts for the essentials and emphasizing self-sufficiency and ingenuity as valued character traits. Many also consider themselves gentlemen, with old-fashioned manners and a complex personal code of behavior.
Some people find this male culture off-putting. People who reject strictly traditional gender roles may dislike the heavy emphasis on male activities, for example, while those who think sensitivity is an important trait may find it difficult to relate. Other people point out that the man’s man has been presented as a prime example of how to behave for quite a long time in literature, movies and songs, and that centuries of praise for manly men can’t all be wrong.
