What’s the King James Only Movement?

[ad_1]

The King James Only Movement promotes the KJV as the only acceptable Bible, rejecting modern translations. Some churches teach on the basis of the KJV, but this movement is divisive and refuted by many scholars. Preference for the KJV does not equate to corrupt Christianity.

The King James Only Movement refers to a growing movement, particularly in conservative Christianity, that promotes the King James Bible Version (KJV) as the only acceptable text from which to interpret God’s word. This movement began in the 1960s as modernized Bible texts, some with translation fixes, began to appear appealing to a new audience of Bible readers. Some have hailed these new Bibles, such as the New American Standard Bible, as better and more authoritative, and above all more accessible, than the language in which the King James Bible is composed, a language comparable to Shakespeare’s.

While there is an inherent beauty to the King James Bible due to its use of language, many readers find it inaccessible and not exactly attuned to modern language. Those versions of the KJV which were essentially copies of the original did not have an updated translation with more modern scholarship on ancient languages; so there are translation errors noted. Other versions are updated to reflect more modern translations of some words and lyrics, but the King James Only Movement may reject this as well. It should be noted that this movement is limited to those Christian religions, which accept the KJV as authoritative. Catholics, while they may own a KJV, usually also have a Catholic Bible, which includes the Apocrypha.

The movement to reject modern interpretations and use the KJV only gained momentum with the 1993 publication of Gail Riplinger’s book New Age Bible Versions: A Comprehensive Documentation Exposing the Message, Men, and Manuscripts Moving Mankind to the Future. only world religion of the Antichrist. Riplinger’s views can be condensed as follows. The KJV is the only authoritative text, its translation was divinely inspired and the manuscripts used for the translation are perfect. Also occultists and satanists who try to turn Christians away from God are deceiving people who don’t support the King James Only Movement.

Because of the King James Only Movement there are now some churches, which can usually be described as the most conservative, that teach on the basis of the original KJV and do not accept other alternatives. While these churches attract some serious biblical scholars, other equally serious biblical scholars refute the movement as incorrect from a standpoint of textual interpretation and also because the movement appears unnecessarily divisive in Christianity. Since KJV churches can claim that satanic conspiracy is behind all other biblical interpretations, this would put most mainstream Christians in the middle of practicing the faith that is indeed led by Satan. It also fuels the controversy between nominally Protestant faiths and Catholicism.

There are a number of less controversial reasons why people might prefer the King James Bible. It contains some of the finest examples of 17th century English and may be the version people are used to reading from childhood. This preference does not necessarily mean that people using a more modern interpretation are somehow practicing a corrupt form of Christianity. It is only preference without prejudice towards other Christians.
