Rock climbing instructors teach safe climbing techniques, tying knots, and demonstrate climbing techniques. No degree is required, but extensive climbing experience and good interpersonal skills are necessary. They are also responsible for maintaining equipment.
Working as a rock climbing instructor is generally ideal for people with an adventurous spirit and excellent communication skills. The primary role of this job is to teach others how to climb safely and demonstrate associated skills. In most cases, an individual will be employed by a camp, gym, or outdoor adventure program. Generally speaking, no degree is required, but a rock climbing instructor will need significant experience in the sport and sometimes a certificate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Typical duties include meeting and greeting participants, giving instructions for tying the knots, teaching how to tie, demonstrating climbing techniques, and maintaining equipment.
A primary duty of a climbing instructor is to meet and greet the participants. Before starting any actual instruction, the instructor will usually introduce himself to a group of participants and tell a little about himself. For example, he can discuss his climbing knowledge and get acquainted with the group. Typically, he will also review safety guidelines and show participants the various types of equipment that will be used. Consequently, good interpersonal skills and extensive climbing knowledge are required for this job.
After an initial introduction, a climbing instructor usually instructs participants on how to properly tie knots. Since ropes are mandatory for most forms of climbing, it is important that each person is familiar with the basics of knot tying. In most cases, this instruction only covers the basics, but it’s necessary to stay safe.
Along with this, most courses will also teach participants how to tie. This is a technique used in rock climbing to prevent climbers from falling off and coming down after climbing to the top of a ledge. To teach tying, the climbing instructor will show participants how to stay secure in a harness and properly thread a rope through a tying device.
Once a group has an understanding of basic tying and knot tying techniques, a climbing instructor will demonstrate climbing techniques. In many cases this will be done in a controlled environment such as a rock climbing wall. The instructor usually shows people how to hang on to rock formations, maintain balance, and optimize hand and foot placement. In addition, he can demonstrate how to increase endurance during a climb.
Additionally, an individual in this position will usually be responsible for maintaining all of the equipment he uses. That means checking the ropes, harnesses, belay devices and carabiners for wear. When equipment becomes worn out or unsafe, it is also your job to inform a supervisor or request additional equipment.
