What’s ASAP?

[ad_1]

ASAP is an acronym used in military settings, offices, and informal contexts to mean “as soon as possible.” It is often used in texting and requests for quick action. In the medical world, STAT is used for emergencies. In the military, ASAP can also stand for “any situation always ready” and refers to a sports drink. There are also various organizations, computer programs, and songs with the acronym.

If you look up the many definitions of the term ASAP, you will find that they mostly identify the term as an acronym or abbreviation for words ASAP. When pronounced, ASAP (asap, asap) is pronounced A-sap, with a long A sound on the first syllable. There is little account of the term’s origin, although it is used in military settings, offices, and a variety of informal contexts.

ASAP lends itself well to texting. Sometimes you will see the term WRASAP, in uppercase or lowercase. This typically means “will respond as soon as possible.” On business memos or in other contexts, you may be asked to do things, answer things, or produce things very quickly. This often means working faster than you normally would and possibly putting everything else aside to get whatever needs to be done ASAP. The term means doing things first, especially when used in a request.

While the medical world uses many abbreviations, this common term is less common in hospitals. Instead, the word STAT is used to indicate emergencies or to require that blood tests be given top priority and returned as soon as possible. ASAP can still be used in physician offices, but is undoubtedly less common than STAT.

In military terms, while ASAP can mean as soon as possible, it also stands for the words, any situation always ready. This referred to a sports drink made for US special operations teams. When they couldn’t have meals on hand, the beverage answered a meal replacement that was light to carry and didn’t degrade at high temperatures. The drink probably came after the use of the term meaning as soon as possible. It bears some resemblance to other military acronyms such as MRE, ready-to-eat meals.

To confuse matters, there are a number of organizations, computer programs, and even songs known by the acronym. These include the Applied Security Review Program, automated check-in and retrieval, and Serviced Apartment Provider Association. Sometimes ASAP is used jokingly to mean as slow as possible or as southern as possible. There are also bands and several songs with the name.
