Chalkboard erasers are used to remove chalk from blackboards and can be made of felt strips held together with glue. They can be cleaned by tapping them on a solid surface or soaking them in warm water. Whiteboard erasers are similar and cost a few dollars.
A chalkboard eraser is a supplement and tool used with whiteboards. Most often used in classrooms, these erasers allow you to erase chalk on a blackboard. The eraser is used to clean the surface of a chalkboard, removing the white or colored powder that chalk is most commonly made of. By making the chalkboards reusable, the erasers are reusable on their own and often have a long life. Similar products can come in the form of whiteboard erasers and marker erasers, which work much like whiteboard erasers to remove more modern marks from chalkboards in classrooms.
A common chalkboard eraser is made of strips of felt held together with sticky paper or glue. These felt strips can be accompanied by pieces of cardboard in between to provide a sturdier rubber. Felt tips are used as the surface of the eraser and come into contact with the chalkboard to erase old chalk marks. The eraser is often only a few inches long and wide, and can typically fit in a pants pocket.
While chalkboard erasers are used to remove chalk from blackboards, they quickly accumulate chalk dust and often get dirty. Some large cloths on the whiteboard may fill the surface of the eraser with dust, making it impossible to clean the whiteboard further. Once the felt surface is dirty, the dust will no longer be removed with the whiteboard eraser, but moved and smudged.
Cleaning a whiteboard eraser is pretty primitive and is as simple as tapping the eraser against a solid surface or metal filter. The eraser can also be cleaned by soaking it in warm water. This method will not allow for immediate use, however, as the eraser will then need to dry before it can be used. Cleaning rubber by beating it on a surface was popular in the early part of the 1900s. Teachers often did it in class or asked children to do it, sending dust particles into the air. The dust particles eventually proved dangerous, inducing sneezing, asthma and narrowed airways.
Costing a few dollars in the United States, whiteboard eraser is still commonly used in classrooms or by people who have whiteboards at home. Improvements made chalkboard erasers smaller, made surfaces thicker, and added accessories like handles, allowing them to be strapped to the back of the hand for quicker use.
