Captain Jack Harkness is the main character of Torchwood – a spin-off series from the Doctor Who universe, a hallmark of British television. He first appeared in “The Empty Child”, an episode of Doctor Who which aired on May 21, 2005. Since then, he has appeared in every episode of the show up until the season one finale.
The TV series Torchwood, broadcast on the BBC Three network, was then introduced in December 2006. Jack Harness also appeared in three episodes of the third season of Doctor Who (2007) and is one of the rare TV characters to find himself in the process of development through double series.
Jack Harkness, or Captain Jack, is a time traveling con man from the 51st century. He is bisexual, even pansexual, it is sometimes said, explaining that in the 51st century, with the discovery of man that he is not alone in the world, sexuality has become much less important.
Not much is known about Jack Harkness’s youth. In fact, we don’t even know his real name. His current identity is the one he stole from a dead WWII soldier, who he later met and fell in love with in an episode of Torchwood involving a time rift. It is known, however, that he hails from the Boeshane Peninsula and was the first man from that region to join the Time Agency, earning him the nickname “Face of Boe”. Incidentally, the “Face of Boe” is also the name of the oldest being in the universe, a creature whose entire body is shaped like a gigantic face and which the Doctor has met on several occasions, one of which was his death. We are led to the conclusion that Jack Harkness and the face of Moe are one and the same, its unprecedented duration being the result of an event in the Doctor Who season 1 finale.
Currently, Captain Jack is a member of Torchwood, an agency created by Queen Victoria to conduct research on extraterrestrials on Earth. He runs Torchwood Three, a subsidiary of the agency which is located in a space-time rift and is first mentioned in the Doctor Who episode “The Unquiet Dead”, in Cardiff, Wales. The headquarters, also called the Hub, is underground and is filled with all manner of alien technology.
Captain Jack oversees a team that includes a police officer (Gwen Cooper), a doctor (Dr. Owen Harper), a computer specialist (Toshiko Sato), and a general support man who appears to take on the role of butler to everything round (Ianto Jones). While Jack Harkness is the undisputed leader of his team, when he’s with the Doctor he willingly takes a back seat, obeying orders almost without question. He is portrayed as a strong leader (Torchwood) and reliable second-in-command (Doctor Who) with a good understanding of technology, both Terran and non-Ternese. Much like the doctor, he is seen approaching morally ambiguous situations head on.
In terms of romance, it is implied that Jack Harkness is in a relationship with Ianto Jones, one of his employees. He is also hinted to have feelings for the Doctor, although he never acts on them as the Doctor seems to be portrayed as a creature somewhat above normal romantic interactions.
