What’s a stun gun?

[ad_1]

Stun guns are non-lethal weapons that immobilize attackers without causing permanent damage. They work by overstimulating muscles and reducing blood sugar, rendering the attacker immobile. Stun guns come in different models and have no adverse effects on the heart or organs. They are legal in most states and can be carried concealed or unconcealed without a license.

A stun gun is a non-lethal weapon that delivers a low amperage, high voltage shock, which will immobilize an attacker for several minutes without causing permanent damage. Stun guns are considered to have reasonable strength to resist attack, are legal in most states, and may be carried concealed or unconcealed, without a license.
A stun gun doesn’t shoot anything. Instead it looks similar to a portable phone, with two prongs sticking out at one end. When you push the pointed end against an attacker and pull the trigger, an electrical charge passes through his body.

A stun gun works on the muscular and neural systems, rather than relying on pain. The discharge overstimulates the attacker’s muscles causing them to work extremely hard and fast, but inefficiently, resulting in a loss of balance and control. Muscle stimulation reduces the aggressor’s blood sugar by converting it into lactic acid. Without blood sugar, muscles have no energy to function, rendering the attacker immobile. This biological domino effect occurs seconds after being stunned and the attacker enters a mental stupor.

Stun guns come in a variety of models that will deliver charges ranging from 50,000 to 625,000 volts at about 3 milliamperes or 0.003 amps. The charge released by a stun gun will pass through an assailant’s clothing, but will not return to the wielder’s body, even if there is extensive body contact between the assailant and the victim.

The length of time a stun gun remains in contact with the attacker determines the type of effect the gun produces. A contact time of 1/2 second will attract the attacker’s attention and cause discomfort and muscle twitching. Contact time of 1-2 seconds will stun the attacker and produce muscle spasms, while 1-5 seconds offers the maximum benefit of total loss of muscle control and balance. Recovery time will be several minutes.

Stun guns have not been shown to have adverse effects on the heart or organs. With a lethal dose at 1 full amp, the amount of amperage needed to be considered even moderately dangerous is far beyond what a stun gun is designed to deliver.
Stun guns work best with 9-volt NiCad rechargeable batteries, although alkaline batteries will work as well. Stun guns will deliver several discharges before needing a battery replacement or recharge.

Some states restrict the use of stun guns. Before purchasing a defensive handgun, be sure to check with your local law enforcement agencies for applicable laws.
