During his seven summers as a lifeguard, he was credited with rescuing 77 people who had died from drowning. Beginning in 1926 at age 15, Reagan began working as a lifeguard in Dixon, Illinois. He continued every summer until he graduated from Eureka College in 1932 with degrees in economics and sociology. After that, he quit his summer lifeguard job and got a full-time job as a sports broadcaster for a radio station in Davenport, Iowa.

Before entering politics, Reagan had been a successful actor for over 20 years. Reagan appeared in 53 films and served as president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1947 to 1952 and 1959 to 1960.
Reagan is the only US president to have ever been divorced. First Lady Nancy Reagan was his second wife; they married in 1952 after Reagan’s first marriage to actress Jane Wyman ended in 1948.
A 6,000-pound (2,721.55 kg) section of the Berlin Wall in Germany was given to Reagan in honor of his efforts to persuade Soviet and East German officials to tear down the wall.
