The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat is the authoritative source on the world’s tallest buildings, measuring from the height of the building above the structural or architectural top. The top ten tallest buildings are in Asia or the United States, with Taipei 101 being the tallest. The list includes buildings for residential, commercial, manufacturing, or mixed use.
When talking about the tallest buildings in the world, it’s important to specify exactly what you’re measuring. Advertisers must decide whether the building should be measured from sidewalk level or below, whether or not television towers or masts are included, and whether an antenna, flagpole or spire should count. A building differs from a tower in its primary use, being designed for residential, commercial, manufacturing or mixed use, whereas a tower is not.
The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, formerly the Joint Committee on Tall Buildings, in partnership with Emporis Buildings, is the authoritative source of information on the world’s tallest buildings, and their list of tallest buildings, drawn from an extensive database, si based on the height of the building above the structural or architectural top, which includes spiers and pinnacles, but does not include antennas, masts or flagpoles. Prior to 9/11, the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, New York were ranked fifth (11m) and sixth (1,368m) on the list of tallest buildings in the world.
