Classroom Resources: Types and Varieties

[ad_1]

Classroom resources include books, educational websites, films, and specialized equipment. Books are the most common resource, while the internet is increasingly used for research. Specialized classes require specific equipment, which may be provided by the institution or purchased by the student.

Some of the more common classroom resources are books, educational websites, films or videos, and other media that can help an instructor demonstrate key concepts in a lesson. Some disciplines, however, require the use of resources that are unique to them. For example, nursing students may use medical equipment and software designed specifically for the nursing profession. Some common examples of classroom resources in a chemistry class might include microscopes and Bunsen burners.

Books tend to be the most commonly used classroom resource because they are relatively affordable and can be easily transported from place to place. In some cases, educational institutions provide students with books for use in the classroom and normally require them to be returned at the end of a lesson. Other institutions require students to purchase books, although students may have the opportunity to sell them back to the school after the course is finished.

The Internet has become another of the most used resources in the classroom. In courses where individuals need to do research, an instructor can use the Internet as a critical research tool, using both information and web-based applications to complete their studies. Students could retrieve data from an informational website and learn how to properly document sources. Many websites offer users access to tutorials, presentations and evaluations. These features are often provided by official organizations, independent users, and other educational institutions.

Films and videos are often used as alternative ways to present information to students. While in most courses students use textual resources, videos can allow them to view a concept from another perspective. In some cases, however, such as in video media courses, film can serve as one of the primary resources in the classroom.

Resources for specialized classes are mostly used in professional programs. When students are preparing to work in a particular profession, a large part of their education may include learning how to operate complicated machinery. In some cases, students may be required to provide their own resources. For example, a student in an accounting program might be required to purchase their own calculator. Likewise, an art student can often be expected to buy their own brushes and canvases.

In settings such as medical programs, many resources are not student-owned. Medical equipment, for example, belongs to a medical institution that allows a student access to it. Students sometimes pay tuition at the start of a course where there is a cost to running classroom resources provided by the school.
