The Alcotest® is a device made by Drager that measures the amount of alcohol in a person’s breath. The 6810 and 7510 are portable units, while the 7110 is larger and more accurate. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requires grain alcohol testing after accidents caused by poor performance. The 6810 and 7510 are handheld units with an ergonomic design, while the 7110 features infrared and electrochemical sensors and has been approved by a Supreme Court decision.
Alcotest® units are devices that test the amount of alcohol in a person’s breath, usually used to determine if the person has consumed too much alcohol to drive safely. The Alcotest® is manufactured by Drager, a family business based in Germany. There are many different Alcotest® units, including the 6810, 7110 and 7510, and all feature technology designed to accurately determine the amount of alcohol in a person’s breath. The 6810 and 7510 are portable units and the 7110 is a larger and more accurate unit.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, requires grain alcohol testing following any automobile accident caused by poor performance, and also allows random testing or testing based on suspicion. The level of alcohol in a person’s breath is measured, anything over 0.04 percent is considered unsafe for driving. Typically, the candidate will need to blow into a device designed to test the level of alcohol in the breath.
The 6810 and 7510 are both handheld units, with an ergonomic design that allows them to be operated by both right and left handed users. These units have a function and as such require only three buttons, an ‘up’, ‘down’ and ‘OK’ button. They feature a removable tube, which protrudes horizontally from the top of the device. After the reading has been taken, the tube can be replaced to ensure hygienic safety. There is also a cap on these devices, to prevent the subject’s mouth from making contact with the tester’s hand.
The units don’t require a large amount of breath to get a reading, which can help with individuals with lower breathing volume, such as smokers. The different Alcotest® portable units have different characteristics. The 6810, for example, has a test memory, so the user can record up to 250 test results. The 7510 is equipped with a Global Positioning System (GPS) module so that users can pinpoint the location of any tests they perform.
The Alcotest® 7110 unit, while larger than its portable counterparts, is the only breathalyzer available that has been approved by a Supreme Court decision. It features infrared and electrochemical sensors, giving users two ways to test alcohol. The infrared sensor is unaffected by any other substances in the subject’s breath that could affect test results, and the electrochemical sensor is unaffected by alcohol vapors in the environment. After pressing the “start” button, each stage of the test is performed automatically or accompanied by comprehensive instructions displayed on the display screen.
