Sweatshops offer unsafe and unfair working conditions, including low wages, excessive hours, dangerous environments, and health problems. They often target illegal immigrants or uneducated individuals and perpetuate poverty cycles. The equipment is often dilapidated and can cause injuries.
Sweatshop conditions is associated with companies, businesses and manufacturers that fail to provide safe, fair and clean working conditions for its employees, employees and staff. Some of the common conditions at a sweatshop include wages below minimum wage, working excessive hours, a dangerous work environment, and conditions that create and promote health problems.
These poor working conditions typically target workers who are unable to obtain employment in traditional workplaces. They are usually illegal immigrants and do not have proper employment papers. It can also include poorly educated or uneducated individuals who lack the skills and experience to find work in more traditional work environments.
Due to the fact that the workers tend to be below average traditional workers, the companies that operate the premises tend to pay very low wages. Typically, the pay isn’t even minimum wage. Without even being paid the minimum wage, it tends to perpetuate the poverty of the cycle in which shop workers tend to live alone or with their families.
Common sweatshop conditions also tend to require workers to work longer hours than is generally allowed by law. For example, in the United States, a typical work week is up to 40 hours for a full-time worker. Sweatshop common terms can cause workers to work excessive hours, such as 80 or 90 hour weeks, but without any additional overtime compensation.
One of the most common sweatshop conditions is the danger of the work environment itself. Typically, the premises have no air conditioning in the summer months and no heat in the winter months. Especially in manufacturing plants, there is also no adequate ventilation to ensure that workers are breathing clean, safe air and that any chemicals emitted from the manufacturing process are handled properly.
Unclean working conditions can also contribute to poor conditions in the sweatshop. Improper cleaning of food, chemicals or by-products can create all sorts of health problems for workers. Premises that have rodent or pest problems can create even more health problems. Rodents and insects have diseases that can create even poorer working conditions which can result in disease and illness for workers.
Even the equipment and machinery in the hoodies tends to be poor and dilapidated. Inoperable machinery can cause injury to workers. Some of these injuries are minor, but other injuries can partially or completely disable the worker, which may even prohibit them from working.
