Turkish linguists can work in academia or translation, with tasks including teaching, researching, and translating or interpreting documents. Some jobs require a high security clearance and extensive knowledge of Turkish culture.
There are several possible jobs for a Turkish linguist with a solid knowledge of the Turkish language and linguistic principles. The two main careers of a Turkish linguist are academia and translation. A Turkish linguistics scholar will likely spend a large portion of their time teaching and researching. The exact tasks for a translator vary by configuration, but can include translating or interpreting documents, conversations, or media.
A Turkish teacher is a possible job for a Turkish linguist. Like other teachers, a Turkish teacher taught courses in his field of study, which could include Turkish language and general linguistics courses. Many Turkish linguists are proficient in several different languages and therefore may be called upon to teach one of these languages as well. In addition to teaching, a Turkish teacher would likely also research and write books or papers for publication in academic journals. The relative amount of time a professor spends on these two tasks – teaching and research – varies between universities.
Several different tasks can be assigned to a Turkish linguist who takes a job as a translator. In general, translation refers to the conversion of written documents from one language to another. This can sometimes be done partially by computer through the use of computational linguistics technology, but it takes a person with native or near-native fluency in the target language to verify the computer’s work.
Interpretation, on the other hand, refers to the real-time interpretation of spoken language. Consecutive interpreting occurs when there is a pause in speech to allow time for the interpreter to speak. Simultaneous interpretation, on the other hand, is when there is no interruption in speech, and the interpreter must listen to what is being said and translate at the same time. Some Turkish linguist jobs will require both types of interpretation.
Since the beginning of the 21st century, several Turkish linguist jobs have been available by the US government related to international relations between the US and Turkey and the Turkic-speaking peoples. These jobs often required a high security clearance because the job could be related to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. A high level of linguistic sophistication may be required in such work, as translation work may involve different concepts in addition to simple factual information. Extensive knowledge of Turkish culture would also be an asset in such positions.
