Picture framers create frames for artwork, documents, and other items. They work in framing shops or as freelancers and require skills in design, measuring, cutting, and client communication. The profession is unregulated, and most framers gain skills through apprenticeships or classes. Framers consult with clients on color, style, and size preferences and may use prefabricated frames or build frames from scratch. They also work with artists to stretch canvases and prepare supplies.
A picture frame is a craftsman who frames documents, art, keepsakes and other items for display. He or she can work for a framing shop or craft store or work as a freelancer. There are a number of skills involved in framing images, including aesthetic design, measuring and cutting materials, stretched canvas, and client meetings.
Image framing is an unregulated profession, and most people who work in framing gain their skills through apprenticeships or classes. Community colleges, craft centers, and other educational facilities often offer framing workshops and classes. The Professional Picture Framer’s Association, an international organization dedicated to high-quality framing arts, offers two levels of framing certification.
The daily activities of a photo frame depend on the type of work to be completed. For a simple job, the frame starts by talking to the customer. Often, a client will have certain specifications, including overall job size and framing color and style. The framer must take into account the wishes of the customers and guide their choices as well.
For example, the color of the rug should enhance the artwork without overwhelming it. The framer must distinguish the temperature of the dominant hue, whether cool or warm, and decide whether a hue or shade complements the overall color scheme. The frame style should also reflect the style of the artwork or item. An experienced photographer is able to provide multiple color and style options to their client.
After a meeting with the client, the designer must assemble a prefabricated frame or build a frame from wooden frames. A prefabricated frame is usually painted or stained, but if a draftsman builds the frame from scratch, he or she must also stain or paint it to the customer’s specifications. If a custom mat is required, the framer must also cut this before attaching it with adhesive to the item to be shaped. The frame may also have to attach glass to the frame as well as a dust cover.
Sometimes three-dimensional items such as books, baseballs, letters written on both sides, or dried flowers are brought to the photographer by a client. These are complicated requests that require a high degree of skill. A frame maker may have to use a shadow box, multiple frames with hinges and double glass sides, or a special type of display case to properly frame the item. A framer must still consult with the client and address their style, color, and size preferences.
Conspirators also work with artists to prepare supplies. One of the most common services provided by frame authors is canvas stretching. The imager creates the frame for the canvas to the artist’s size specifications and fits or stretches the canvas over it. The artist uses canvas as a surface for paintings and drawings.
