Electrician skills needed?

[ad_1]

To become an electrician, focus on math and science in high school, consider an apprenticeship program, be physically fit, and consider obtaining computer and commercial driver’s license training.

Electrical wiring and complex circuits in buildings, vehicles and other applications must be installed, repaired and maintained by a traveling electrician who has received the necessary training and education to go into the field. If you think this field might be right for you, it’s a good idea to assess your skills and talents early on. While in high school, focus on math and science courses and develop your reading skills accordingly. While it is not always necessary to become a journeyman electrician, it is a good idea to obtain a high school diploma or equivalent qualification.

After graduating from high school, you may be eligible to enter an apprenticeship program. It’s best to check with a local electrician’s union or several electric companies to see if you qualify. You’ll need to fill out applications for these positions, which is a good time to highlight your education. If you have had any experience with electrician jobs in the past or have done internships, keep them in mind applications as they will most likely help you gain an apprenticeship which in turn will allow you to become a professional electrician.

Be prepared to spend a significant part of your day on your feet doing physical work if you want to become a journey electrician. The job will require you to do some heavy lifting and you may need to reach, lift, climb and bend. Physical fitness is important for the job and will help prevent injuries while working.

Many modern electricians use computer programs or other tools to perform various tasks on the job; therefore, it is a good idea to obtain computer training if you are not familiar with basic computer functions. Many of the skills needed to become a professional electrician will be taught during an apprenticeship, but developing the skills soon will help prepare you to quickly excel in the field.

You might also consider getting a commercial driver’s license (CDL) as many companies hire electricians who frequently visit job sites. That means driving a big truck or repairing a vehicle to the site, and while not all companies require you to have a CDL, it’s a good idea to get one to boost your credentials.
