What’s Syngas?

Syngas is a gaseous product made from hydrogen and carbon monoxide, produced through various methods including coal gasification and biomass production. It is used for steam and electricity, as a chemical ingredient, and as a fuel. Syngas fermentation is a process to produce other fuels and chemicals. The demand for synthesis gas has increased due to various factors, but stricter environmental regulations pose challenges for production.

Syngas, also called syngas, is a term for the gaseous products developed from the synthesis of quantities of hydrogen and carbon monoxide by different production methods. Some of the methods used to produce synthesis gas are coal gasification, steam reforming of natural gas, waste-to-energy and biomass production. Syngas is also an intermediate byproduct developed during the processing of ammonia, methanol, synthetic petroleum, or synthetic natural gas. Syngas can be used both as a lubricant and as a fuel.

Syngas is often used to create steam and electricity and as a chemical ingredient in petrochemical refineries. By-products of petroleum that might otherwise become waste can be stored as a raw material for its production. These materials interact under pressure and at extremely high temperatures in a reactor to produce synthesis gas. During the gasification refining process, any material containing carbon can be converted. The most commonly used method of producing synthesis gas is through biomass production. Biomass plants can use sewage sludge, demolition wood, scrap waste and shredded tires, among other things, as feedstock for reactors.

There are many types of gasification reactors that use various methods to transform the feedstock into the synthesis gas components. Essentially, extremely high temperatures of up to 2,280° F (1248.89° C) are applied to the raw material. These high temperatures melt and solidify the cracked glass or tar aggregate materials. This aggregate is then fed into a gasifier, which melts it into a liquid base as synthetic gas or in gaseous form, depending on its end use.

Syngas fermentation is a process to produce other fuels and chemicals. In fermentation, microbes are added to hydrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Microorganisms convert them into carbon and energy sources. These carbon and energy sources are in turn used to create acetic acids, butyric acids, butanol, ethanol and methane. Since the fermentation of syngas requires lower temperatures and pressures than other chemical processes and requires less specificity regarding mixtures of carbon dioxide and hydrogen, it is easy to produce.

The demand for synthesis gas has increased due to various supply and demand factors. Many of the base materials have higher concentrations of sulfur and nitrogen that need to be purified, which added extra steps to the refining process. Additionally, oil sands and heavier feedstocks require higher temperatures for separation. Most countries around the world have made their environmental regulations stricter, so the production of synthesis gas faces stricter restrictions in production.
