What’s a trench coat?

[ad_1]

The trench coat was originally designed for men in World War I, but became popular for both sexes after the war. Thomas Burberry’s gabardine design was waterproof and belted, and is still popular today. Trench coats are best for moderate temperatures and rainy weather, and have evolved in style and length. The straps on the coat were originally practical, but are now mostly for show.

The trench coat was born out of practical necessity, but has long been associated with fashion. It’s currently one of Tim Gunn’s ten must-have things every woman should have. However, these coats are worn by both sexes and were initially adapted for use by men during World War I, hence the name trench coat, which refers to the trenches used for military engagement during wartime.

The typical trench coat, first designed by Thomas Burberry, used gabardine fabric and was waterproof. It was usually at least knee-length, and only available to certain officers in the British and French armies, as optional clothing. The coat was usually belted and many were lined with warm material such as wool. They were a good alternative to twill wool coats, and could be a bit lighter while still providing some protection from the cold and/or rain.

The popularity of the coats grew when soldiers brought them home from war and some armies wore them again during World War II. As World War II came to a close, overcoats were extremely fashionable and became an alternative to long woolen coats. Coat styles were made for both men and women, with Burberry designs being the most popular initially. Today, Burberry is still known for its trench coat styles and many people will pay the high prices the company charges to get an authentic Burberry.

Many designers have created various styles of trench coats, and generally these coats are best suited for moderate temperatures and rainy weather. They do not provide as much protection against the cold, although zippers on linings made of wool or other materials can help. Trench coats are generally better for rainy weather because their materials are often highly resistant to water. Although gabardine coats are still popular, there are now numerous fabrics that can be used for these coats.

Another change has been the length of the coat and the presence of absence or belts. Many coats do not have belts, and several styles of women’s trench coats are shorter, reaching mid-thigh instead of below the knee. However, the length of the coat really comes down to preference, and those looking for a trench coat can find a variety to choose from.

People may notice multiple straps on coats and these had a practical purpose initially, though now they are mostly for show. When the coats were being designed, Burberry began to improve their design by adding shoulder straps to which officers could attach pins indicating rank. D-rings, D-shaped metal rings, were also attached to coats and could be used to attach equipment such as hand grenades.
