What’s a hanky?

Bandanas are large, brightly colored pieces of cloth worn on the head or neck. They are often made of cotton and come in many colors and prints. They can be used for practical purposes, such as protecting from dust and debris, or as a fashion statement. They can also be used to make backpacks and other accessories. Certain colors have been associated with gangs, but they are generally seen as fashionable or practical.

A bandana, or kerchief, is a large piece of cloth that is square or triangular in shape and usually brightly colored with some type of pattern or design. Sometimes called a bandana, it is usually worn on the head or around the neck. The name comes from the Hindu word bandhana, which means “to bind.”

Often made from cotton or cotton-blend fabrics, bandanas are sold in hundreds of color variations. The most common print is paisley, but there are many different prints, designs, and patterns incorporated as well. Some are also made of different fabrics, including silk.

A scarf is used for both decorative and practical purposes. Practical uses for wearing one include working outdoors or in hot conditions. Worn around the neck, the drape can be pulled up around the nose and mouth to decrease inhalation of dust and debris. Worn around the head, it can prevent perspiration from reaching the eyes. Many athletes use them for similar reasons.

Another practical use for a bandana that also serves a fashion purpose is as a headscarf for cancer patients. There are hundreds of catalogs specializing in scarves and other fashionable hats for chemotherapy patients. Many other people choose to wear one or a similar headdress solely as a fashion statement. They can cover the entire head or form a headband that simply wraps around the forehead and ties in the back.

Other uses for a bandana include tying the four corners together to form a backpack, substituting for a bandana, cowboy and engineer outfits, and various other fashion statements. Certain colored bandanas have long been associated with gangs in urban areas, but most areas simply view them as fashionable headwear or practical accessories. The popular reality television show Survivor saw the revival of a similar headdress called a buff, which differs in that a buff is a continuous band of cloth rather than a single, square piece of cloth.
