What’s a Stationary Engineer?

[ad_1]

A stationary engineer oversees building operations, repairs, and upgrades in manufacturing plants and public buildings. They monitor new equipment, make adjustments and repairs, and work with a team to ensure smooth operations.

Permanent engineers cover a large amount of ground within any given manufacturing facility. Considered a permanent post with the manufacturing complex, a stationary engineer oversees general building operations, including replacements, refurbishments, and repairs to various support systems. Often, he will work alongside other engineers to ensure that all systems are maintained properly and that a regular schedule of testing and upgrades is observed.

In addition to working in manufacturing plants, a stationary engineer can also find work in any type of public building. Schools, shopping malls and hospitals will all require the services of a person in this position. Depending on the size of the operation, the engineer may work as a member of an operations engineering team. In this environment, the engineer will be involved in vital functions such as climate control, boiler and steam systems, power generators and water systems.

One of the stationary engineer’s primary duties has to do with the start-up phase of new equipment. The engineer monitors new equipment to ensure that everything is working within limits for safety and efficiency. In the past, this was usually achieved by monitoring a number of indicators and metrics as part of the process. Today, these tasks are more commonly handled with a computer interface.

In addition to assisting in starting up new equipment, the Stationary Engineer will also be involved in the adjustments and periodic repair of the equipment. Once repairs have been made, the technician will evaluate the performance of the equipment and order the necessary modifications. In the event that the equipment fails to perform to established standards, the engineer may authorize the machinery to be shut down until another course of action is determined.

As a specialized type of operations engineer, the stationary engineer is usually permanently assigned to the facility. With a diverse range of duties to perform, it’s not uncommon for a Senior Stationary Engineer to work with a team of assistants to ensure all systems in the building are monitored and repaired quickly. In doing so, the engineer allows the facility to continue operating with little or no disruption.
