Sometimes, when one of these harmful stimuli is detected, the immune system and inflammation kick in to try and rid the body of these things.
Inflammation is part of the response that attempts to cleanse the body of whatever is causing harm. The immune system has special cells that attack bacteria and viruses. They can also recognize certain disease-causing beings, known as pathogens, and use their experience to be better suited for the next battle.
This recognition system is why vaccines work. Vaccines are actually dead or weakened viruses that are injected into the body so that the immune system can get used to the pathogen. However, this doesn’t work for all viruses, because some types can evolve to avoid recognition. An example is the HIV virus which causes AIDS.
The immune system and inflammation can work in the short or long term. Brief attacks are known as acute responses, while chronic inflammation is usually the result of long-term illness. The immune system and inflammation can also be a problem with autoimmune diseases. An autoimmune disease is an irregularity in which the immune system attacks particular, usually healthy, areas of the body for reasons that are not fully understood. An example of this type of disease would be rheumatoid arthritis.
Immune system function and inflammation help fight off disease. Humans and other creatures are unlikely to survive without them. While inflammation may sometimes seem problematic, it’s actually necessary.
