The US Navy offers several enlistment programs, including MEPS, DEP, Direct Appointment, NROTC, and the degree program, which partially or fully pays for education. MEPS includes aptitude tests and a physical exam, while DEP allows recruits to delay training. NROTC is a scholarship program, and the Direct Appointment program allows college graduates to join as officers.
The first type of enlistment in the Navy is called a Military Entry Processing Station (MEPS), in which the person recruited goes through several assessment tests. The Delayed Entry Program (DEP) allows a recruit to join the navy but begin training and service later. The Direct Appointment Program qualifies college graduates to join the US Navy as an officer. NROTC is a scholarship program that requires participants to take marine science courses in college and serve in the navy for a minimum of five years. Another type of US Navy enlistment is called a degree program, where recruits serve the Navy and attend college.
Before officially joining the military, potential recruits must pass the MEPS. During MEPS, potential recruits are required to take an aptitude test called the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). They are also examined by a doctor to ensure physical fitness, in addition to passing a pre-enlistment interview. If the potential recruiter does not have a serious health problem and passes the interview, he or she will take the oath of enlistment. In some cases, MEPS is as many recruits as possible for the Navy enlistment.
DEP gives potential recruiters time to complete a housing lease, temporarily place pets, or tie up other loose ends prior to official enlistment in the Navy. Tour duration, training and duty station are locked for up to one year. If the potential recruit decides that he no longer wants to join the military, support will be allowed until basic training.
The Direct Appointment Program allows graduates to begin their enlistment as an officer. There are a limited number of direct commissions available, however, so not all enlisted navy graduates can become officers. Choosing a potential recruit depends on his skills in addition to the experience he has in that field.
Covering up to $180,000 USD, the NROTC scholarship funds the education of pledged recruits. This scholarship can also pay for textbooks, miscellaneous tuition fees, and more. A physical exam is required prior to granting the scholarship in addition to meeting other requirements.
The degree program is a type of US Navy enlistment that partially or fully pays for a recruit’s education. Recruits can choose between going to school when they are off duty or during active duty. Education while on active duty is possible by bringing teachers on board or completing assignments remotely. Navy service members can also help fund a dependent’s education.
