An HTML footer tag defines text or code as belonging to the footer section and can be positioned with CSS or JavaScript. It can contain any information except for a header tag and is often used for copyright or contact information.
A footer in Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) is an element tag that defines the text or code within the tag as belonging to the HTML footer section. Unlike a footer in word processing programs, an HTML footer does not automatically place text at the bottom of a document or in the viewing window. The primary purpose of using a footer tag in a document is to define text belonging to the foot section so that it can be processed and positioned with other layout methods, such as cascading style sheets (CSS) or JavaScript®. An HTML footer can contain almost any type of code or information, except for a header tag.
For the most part, an HTML footer behaves like any other standard tag, although the tag name implies positioning information. Wherever the footer is located within an HTML document, that’s exactly where it will appear when the page is viewed. Also, an HTML document can have as many footer tags as you want without restrictions. The way a footer is displayed is similar to any other HTML text, including its placement in table cells and other formatting elements.
Similarly, like other tags, an HTML footer can contain almost any information or code required, with one exception. An HTML footer cannot contain a header tag within its own block. Images, links and any other style elements can be used within a footer without any restrictions. It should be noted that when used in conjunction with advanced layout and positioning styles, it may be difficult to calculate the exact size from a complex footer.
The HTML footer tag helps define a block of text or code that can be retrieved and formatted according to rules set forth in other standard web-based computing languages. In particular, a CSS document can be used to capture a footer and ensure that it displays consistently at the bottom of the document or viewing window, either as a floating visual element or by defining a footer section. A similar effect can be achieved through the use of JavaScript®. This leaves the HTML footer tag as primarily a way to define metadata in a document.
While anything can be placed within a footer in an HTML document, they are often used to contain copyright information or notices. They can also be used to hold contact information such as an email address or telephone number. Depending on the type of website, the footer can also be used to provide a consistent and easy navigation field for navigating between web pages.
