Weight stacks are rectangular bars used to add resistance to weight machines. Each bar weighs the same and has a pin to select the desired weight. Weight stacks are labeled and can help determine progress in strength training.
A weight stack is a set of often flat rectangular bars used to add resistance to some types of weight machines. Typically, each bar weighs the same amount so you can add weight in increments. A pin can be inserted into the front of each bar for an individual to choose the total weight they want for a particular exercise.
Weight machines may be referred to as “stack machines” when they use a weight stack. On these machines, the stack of weighted bars is typically placed one on top of the other vertically. Each weighted bar has two holes. The first, a hole from the top to the bottom of each bar, allows a vertical metal stake to be inserted into the center of the stack.
The second hole on each weighted bar is much smaller. It is usually located on the widest side of the rectangle. This hole can go up to the middle of the bar, meeting the first hole that goes from top to bottom. On some models, this smaller hole goes all the way to the bar.
This vertical metal stake has a series of pre-drilled holes. A selector pin can then be used by inserting it into the second smaller hole in a bar. This selector pin locks into place on the vertical stake. The barbell with the selector pin on it, along with each barbell in the weight stack above it, is now connected to the vertical stake.
Using the selector pin in this manner, one can choose the amount of weight they would like to use from the weight stack when performing a particular exercise. For example, many weight stacks come with approximately 10 to 15 bars at 10 pounds (4.5 kg) each. An individual may choose any number of bars from the stack that together will total the desired unit weight. Additionally, an individual could choose not to use the weight stack and instead perform the exercise without further resistance.
Most of the time, each weighted bar will be labeled in some way to help guide a user. A typical weight stack found in a gym can be labeled so that each bar indicates the total amount of that bar plus the bars above it. Sometimes each bar is simply labeled one, two, three, etc.
A weight stack can be beneficial for those who incorporate strength training into their training routines. It is important to know how much weight an individual can bear without injury. A typical goal of weight training is to gradually improve over time, and a stack of weights can help determine progress. With the ability to quickly and easily change weight on any machine, gym-goers at different fitness levels can safely use the same piece of equipment.
