Game creator jobs vary due to the complexity of video games and the amount of content required. Specialized roles include concept artists, 3D modelers, animators, interface designers, and packaging artists, with different technical knowledge needed for each position. The required jobs can differ from project to project and between companies.
There are several different types of game creator jobs. This is partly due to the amount of content required for a commercial game and partly because video games have dramatically increased in complexity. Many pieces of required game art are assigned to niche artists who specialize in a specific area. Some of the jobs available to game creators are: concept concept, texture texture, background background and three-dimensional (3D) modeler. More specialized jobs that require targeted technical knowledge include animators, interface designers, and packaging artists.
Some game maker jobs require an artist to have good drawing skills and other traditional two-dimensional artistic training. A concept artist fits into this category, providing the basic appearance of characters, backgrounds, and other objects in the game before they are modeled. This means that conceptual artists mostly work like classical artists. If a concept artist deals exclusively with game characters, he may also be known as a character artist.
There are also jobs that require knowledge of 3D modeling software and the ability to visualize completed objects. These types of jobs include 3D modelers who convert concept art into 3D models that can be animated. It may also include the position of a background artist – also known as an environment artist or level designer – whose job it is to build the world in which the game takes place.
Other works by game creators are a combination of both forms. An example of this is a texture artist. This is a person who takes a 3D model and wraps flat two-dimensional images around it to create a sense of texture, clothing, or depth.
Many game artist jobs require special technical knowledge or experience. The animator’s job is one such position. An animator takes the 3D models that have been created and adds virtual bones and muscles to them. Depending on the production, an animator may need knowledge of motion capture techniques, anatomy, and complex mathematical concepts.
Other jobs that may require special knowledge include interface designer positions; they may need to know how a program reacts to customize buttons and scrollbars on the screen. Industrial packaging design is another specialized field. These artists create the CD cases or cases that the games are sold in.
Not all games and game production companies are created equal. This means that the types of game creator jobs can differ from one position to the next. Companies designing mobile games can only use simple two-dimensional graphics and don’t need modelers. Other companies may require a concept artist to work exclusively with raw 3D models. The required jobs may even vary from project to project within the same company.
