Advertising sales representatives generate customer demand through various forms of advertising, including print, television, and the internet. They research potential clients and offer unique service options to fit their needs. They can work for a company or as an independent contractor, with payment based on a commission or percentage of sales.

The advertising sales representative is a specific type of salesperson who tries to generate customer demand through advertising. Such advertising can take any number of forms, including print, television and the internet. While some advertising sales representatives may choose to work in one advertising sales sector, others choose to work in many different forms of advertising, often creating campaigns that incorporate Internet advertising with more conventional print and television elements.

Like all sales professionals, the advertising sales representative seeks to convince clients that the resources he or she can bring to the advertising task are an ideal fit for the client’s needs. He or she will achieve this objective by choosing to demonstrate the additional or unique service options that are offered compared to the main business competitors. This will require the sales representative to know the competition very well. However, an ethical advertising sales representative will never make negative comments about a competitor when trying to secure new business. Instead, this sales professional will notice that he or she can offer certain strategies and services that cannot be found with other companies, and will proceed to articulate how these assets will make a huge difference for the customer.

Someone in this position will take the time to research a potential client ahead of time. Understanding the public relations campaigns the client has used in the past and the impact of those campaigns will help the rep come up with ideas to present to the prospect. Knowing what has worked in the past will help the rep develop ideas that take the client to the next level of work. This approach works best when the rep understands the client’s core business, the type of advertising the client has used successfully in the past, and which sectors of the consumer base the company wants to reach today.

An advertising sales representative can work as part of a company or as an independent contractor. When the representative is employed by a company, there is usually a base salary with a percentage-based commission program in place. For independent advertisers, it is more common for revenue to be based on a percentage of sales generated from the campaign.
