Advanced Pilates are complex exercises that build strength and flexibility, improve posture, and increase energy. They can be performed on a yoga mat or with special equipment like a Pilates Cadillac or reformer. Examples include the lower straight leg double, jackknife, and straight leg pull-up. Special equipment adds stability challenges, making exercises more difficult, such as inverted splits, side crunches, and leafhoppers.

Advanced Pilates are more complex Pilates exercises aimed at people with experience in classical Pilates. Advanced exercises are non-impact exercises that focus on building strength and flexibility in the same way as classic Pilates exercises. Pilates also improves posture, develops core strength, and increases energy. In some cases, advanced Pilates exercises require special equipment, such as a Pilates Cadillac, reformer, Wunda chair, or stair barrel.

Advanced Pilates exercises performed on a yoga mat without equipment include a variety of movements that focus on the abdomen, legs, buttocks, and back. There are also advanced full-body moves that focus on strengthening your inner core. For example, the lower straight leg double is an advanced exercise that focuses on the abdomen. The exercise is performed by lying on the back and raising and lowering the legs with controlled movements.

An advanced Pilates exercise that aims to strengthen the back, legs, and buttocks is the jackknife. The Razor is performed by lying on the back and moving into the pike position with the fingers pointing toward the ceiling. Once balance is achieved, the legs are raised higher and the toes are pointed behind the head until the entire weight of the body rests on the shoulders.

The straight leg pull-up is an advanced Pilates exercise that involves the entire body. Starting in the reverse plank position, one leg is raised with the toes pointing toward the ceiling. The same leg is then lowered in a controlled movement without touching the floor. After approximately five repetitions, the exercise should be performed on the other leg.

Many advanced Pilates students enjoy doing exercises on special equipment that helps them get the most benefits from Pilates exercises. The equipment helps add stability challenges, making exercises more difficult. Some examples of advanced Pilates moves performed with equipment are inverted splits, side crunches, and leafhoppers.

Inverted splits are performed on a Pilates Cadillac. This position is achieved by hanging upside down from the Pilates Cadillac with your legs extended along the bars, while holding on to the bar with your hands. Side crunches are performed by moving your torso up and down while leaning one side of your body over the reformer while box tucked. The grasshopper is performed on a ladder barrel. The body forms an arc with the abdomen resting on the barrel, while both hands hold the ladder and both legs are straight in the air.
