AI & robotics: what’s the link?

AI and robotics are often used together to create machines that resemble humans and animals. AI can make robots “smarter”. They are separate fields, with AI emulating human thought and robotics engineering machines that move. Combining the two creates robots that move and “think” intelligently. This has led to the development of toys, experimental robots, and cybernetics. Cybernetic development aims to create robots or parts of robots that interface with human thought, such as advanced prostheses. Some envision a future where AI and robotics merge with human thought to become one entity.

While AI and robotics are not intrinsically connected, they are often used together in an effort to create computers and machines that more closely resemble humans and other animals. Robots are inherently “smart” only as the program used to move them, so artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to create “smarter” robots. This connection has already been used in the creation of toys, such as robotic pets, as well as demonstrations of robots trying to emulate human thinking and responses. There are also other applications that try to combine the two disciplines, such as cybernetics.

Artificial intelligence and robotics are two commonly related fields of computing and technology, especially in the minds of science fiction writers and speculative technologists. However, they are each separate fields. Artificial intelligence is a field of computing in which software programs are designed in an attempt to emulate how the human brain perceives the world around it and create thoughts and responses to the world. Robotics, on the other hand, is a field of engineering where machines are designed that can move in many different ways. When the two are combined, often the goal is to create a robot that can move and “think” intelligently.

Some of the most common combinations of AI and robotics involve developing robots that move and act like people or animals. A number of toys and products have already gone on sale that react to the environment in a similar way to animals and move around using robotic systems. Experimental robots have also been developed and demonstrated in different environments that move in a surprisingly sophisticated way for a machine. These combinations have spawned everything from robots that can walk up and down stairs and play ping pong to robotic faces that demonstrate ’emotional’ responses based on interacting with people.

Artificial intelligence and robotics can also be linked in other research fields, such as cybernetics. Cybernetic development aims to combine artificial intelligence and robotics in a more organic way, to create robots or parts of robots that interface with human thought. Recent developments in this field include advanced prostheses that can replace lost limbs and enable movement through the use of artificial intelligence programs and the actions of the person wearing the prosthesis. Some futurists envision a world in which cybernetics allows artificial intelligence and robotics to merge so completely that human thought and computers become one new entity, although this is, of course, speculative.
