High school students who wish to apply for an Air Force ROTC scholarship are encouraged to apply early in their senior year. There are essentially three scholarships that high school students are eligible for. The Type 1 scholarship, the most coveted, is mainly offered to students studying one of more than a dozen technical areas, such as Aeronautical Engineering or Meteorological and Atmospheric Sciences. It pays all tuition and most fees, includes a generous textbook allowance, and provides a monthly stipend for living expenses. The second, called Type 2, is similar but limits the tuition and fee premium to a dollar amount roughly equivalent to what an out-of-state student could expect to pay at a state college or university. The third, called Type 7, limits the premium to the amount charged to state students. If the school does not offer different in-state and out-of-state classes, the scholarship may be converted to a three-year scholarship of the second type.
In addition to technical courses, applicants for an Air Force ROTC fellowship can choose to major in any of two dozen different foreign languages, or virtually any non-technical course such as business administration, economics or history. Those who pursue technical courses are almost always assigned to Air Force jobs consistent with those courses.
Also available are Air Force ROTC scholarship programs for entry-level applicants already in their freshman or sophomore year of college, called the College Scholarship Program (ICSP), and for enlisting military personnel from whatever branch of service they wish to attend. college and earn a lieutenant’s commission.
