Airport managers have a multifaceted role, including compliance with aviation regulations, financial planning, maintenance supervision, and acting as a point of contact for government agencies and the media. They may oversee a team of workers and are responsible for ensuring routine maintenance and cleaning of aircraft.

Whether operating a large international airport or a small community, airport manager roles are multifaceted. This professional acts as a point of contact for various government agencies and may also be responsible for developing and maintaining a budget for airport operation. He or she may supervise the maintenance of the aircraft and facilities or hire a maintenance supervisor to do this. In an emergency, this individual may be the only person authorized to contact the media.

One of the biggest responsibilities of an airport manager is to ensure that the facility complies with local aviation regulations. This may require interaction with agencies dealing with aircraft or workplace safety. In addition, the manager may be required to submit reports to these agencies or accompany inspectors whenever they tour the facility. If deficiencies are noted, one of the airport manager’s tasks could be to develop an action plan to correct them and then follow up to ensure the plan is implemented.

Another thing included in an airport manager job description could be financial planning. As the chief executive of an airport, the manager is typically required to approve development plans, lease agreements, and new equipment purchases. Responsibilities may also include overseeing the accounting department, which may include payroll and maintenance budgets.

Aircraft must undergo routine maintenance and cleaning to remain in service, so an airport manager can be responsible for ensuring these tasks are carried out. If the installation is private, these tasks can also be performed by the manager. At a small commercial airport, this individual might supervise one or two maintenance workers responsible for doing this. At an international airport, there might be a maintenance supervisor who oversees a team of workers, and that supervisor might report directly to that executive.

An airport manager can often talk to television or newspaper channels about significant events. This can occur whenever there is a plane crash or a breach of national security. At other times, the manager may be required to announce cancellations or delays due to inclement weather. He or she can also inform the public about new developments at the airport, such as whenever an expansion project is being planned. This can be done by holding a press conference on the premises or conducting a phone interview with reporters to discuss events as they unfold.
